"Everything You Need", the title track to my debut release, is one of those songs that came very quickly. I was at a friend's house playing guitar in the living room; the acoustics in this particular room were beautiful and particularly inspiring that night. I felt the song come on, the music and the lyrics took shape and developed into the song from front to back in less than an hour.
The lyric is conversational, and offers comfort set to a lullaby. As the focus ballad on the album, I wanted a very simple arrangement musically, it called for delicate playing so the message of the lyric was supported and not stepped on. We tracked the basic tracks at House Of Blues Studios in Encino. I'll never forget when Jamie Muhoberac came in with the grand piano part, it was so beautiful I choked up and could barely sing on the original vocal track. Ido Sasson played these delicate little touches on my Rickenbacker Electric 12 String, like the sound of ringing bells. Then Jamie went back and put some warm Hammond on the bridge.
We brought the basic tracks back to Guy Erez' studio (The Green House) for vocal and guitar overdubs. I remember vividly recording the acoustic guitar, it had to have been the hottest summer day of the year, the air conditioning was down at the studio, and the computer hard drives were spinning full tilt, when I listen closely, especially to the instrumental version, I can hear the hard drives winding up and down in the background...we left that in because the emotion of the acoustic guitar performance outweighed the need to have a perfectly clean track.
I've also included an exclusive never before heard track on the player here, a live version of "Everything You Need" from this summer's tour with Dan Reed. It was my first time performing at The Triple Door in Seattle. A fine concert call it is, which is not the type of venue I'm used to; but it was certainly a treat. **Special feature here; all mandamosher.com members can download the live version for free at the bottom of the page.
